Hospital Credentialing and You
Until a short time ago I honestly didn’t know what hospital credentialing was. I had never heard of it. But now that I have I’ll admit that I’m glad that hospitals across the country are doing it! So let’s take a look at what this whole credentialing thing is and how it helps patients.
What is Hospital Credentialing?
Hospital credentialing is a process that doctors have to go through to prove that they are competent and qualified to do certain things in their profession. This just goes to show that it takes more than just a degree to be a doctor these days.
You see, hospitals have caught on to the fact that it takes more than just a degree to make a good doctor. And that’s what credentialing is all about. In order for a doctor to do a procedure in many hospitals they have to prove that they are qualified and competent enough to do it. The procedure will vary from hospital to hospital, but it usually involves some sort of peer review and other things.
These days most hospitals will use some kind of software system to keep track of which doctors have the right credentials and which don’t.
How Credentialing Helps Everyone
What is the scariest thing about going to a hospital for an operation? Well, for me it’s not knowing how competent my doctor really is on the procedure they’re going to be doing! That’s why hospitals are using a credentialing system. It’s just one more way to be sure that a doctor is qualified.
Credentialing can also help reduce the amount of money that hospitals have to spend on lawsuits and investigations associated with mistakes, accidents and malpractice.
I didn’t know about this system until recently, and it’s a safe bet that a lot of you didn’t know about it either. But I’m very glad to learn that this type of system is in place.
