Universal Health Care Can Save Our Economy Part II: Quality Control - Huffington Post

Universal Health Care Can Save Our Economy Part II: Quality Control
Huffington Post, NY
One person however, stated "Low cost is good, but what about quality of care?" Today, I am going to address the issue of the quality control in the proposed non-profit, people-funded, people-managed Universal Health Care System. ...

Healthcare reform: think smaller and don’t fail or aim high and risk all?

Richard A. Gephardt says President Obama has a much better chance of success with healthcare reform if he aims smaller and concentrates on not failing. Aiming smaller may mean extending coverage to most of those presently uninsured, but with fewer benefits, or extending coverage for children or low income groups.

Gephardt, former Missouri congressman and Democratic party leader who bid for presidency in 2004, and who made healthcare reform the focus of his presidential campaign, says asking for more could lead to the whole reform package failing because of cost considerations, as it happened during Clinton's time. Gephardt was house leader then, and witnessed the fiasco first hand.

Gephardt says he is committed to universal coverage, but “to get to the end zone, you have to get to the 50-yard line first.”

Will universal healthcare bankrupt America?

Appeal-Democrat, the Sutter-Yuba counties (California) newpaper, says that universal healthcare sounds good, but it is utopian and it will bankrupt our country. An editorial published today says that the only way for America to reduce its healthcare costs is for the government to get less and not more involved in healthcare.

Incidentally, California's governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a campaigner for universal healthcare, but his $14.9 billion universal healthcare plan failed to pass the state legislature last year.

In countries like Britain and much of Europe, however, almost universal, publicly-funded healthcare has been a fact for more than half a century. And that is why, in spite of their economies being in almost as bad a shape as ours, there is less of sheer human suffering.

Getting ready for the ‘geriatric tsumani’

As the baby boomer generation reaches old age, David Panteleakos says we need to prepare for the 'geriatric tsunami'. Mr. Panteleakos is the administrator of Westview HealthCare Center in Dayville, Conn., one of the top-ranked nursing homes in the nation.

In an interview with the Norwich Bulletin, Mr. Panteleakos said the greatest challenge is to match people's expectations with what is affordable. Medicaid support for the nursing home industry has eroded over the years, and in Connecticut alone 23 homes have closed since 2001.

For the first time in history, the nation will have more old people and fewer children, and a smaller number of productive adults will be forced to support more old people and children.
